Synopsis

In 2029, the machines that exterminated most of humanity lose the war — so they send an unstoppable cyborg assassin back to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor, the mother of the resistance leader who beat them. The resistance sends one soldier to protect her. He has a photograph, a sawed-off shotgun, and no way home.

Review

Made for a pittance by a director whose only credit was a piranha sequel, The Terminator is the great B-movie of the 1980s — a tech-noir chase film (Cameron coined the term for the nightclub where the plot converges) that runs on pure narrative electricity. It has, famously, one of the tightest scripts in genre history: every setup pays off, every payoff sets up, and the time-loop clicks shut like a handcuff.

Casting Schwarzenegger — originally considered for the hero — as the machine was the masterstroke. His accent, his bodybuilder's deliberateness, his 28 lines of dialogue: everything 'wrong' with him as a leading man is exactly right for a machine wearing a man. Stan Winston's effects finish the job, peeling Arnold down to a chrome skeleton that struts through fire in the film's still-terrifying finale, animated by the same stop-motion tradition as Harryhausen's skeletons and scarier than all of them.

Underneath the chase is real dread — Cold War nuclear anxiety wearing a robot mask — and a genuinely moving doomed romance. Linda Hamilton's Sarah begins as a waitress who can't balance her checkbook and ends the film pregnant, armed and driving into a gathering storm: the decade's best character arc compressed into 107 minutes. Born from a fever dream

Cameron conceived the Terminator while sick in Rome: a nightmare image of a chrome torso dragging itself from fire with kitchen knives. He sold the script for one dollar in exchange for the right to direct it.

Orion wanted Schwarzenegger as the hero and O.J. Simpson was floated as the Terminator. After one lunch, Cameron realized Arnold understood the machine better than anyone — he talked about how it would reload without looking.

Kyle Reese is sent back to protect Sarah Connor and becomes John Connor's father — a perfectly closed 'bootstrap' causal loop. Physicists call these self-consistent histories; screenwriters call it the tightest twist of the decade.

Tech-noir on a budget

The film's LA is shot almost entirely at night — partly for mood, partly because night shoots hid the $6.4M budget. The club where Sarah is cornered is literally named 'Tech Noir'; Cameron coined the genre label himself.

The time travel is paradox-embracing fantasy — a closed causal loop where the future creates its own past (John's father is the soldier John sends) — closer to Greek tragedy than physics, though 'consistent-histories' loops are at least discussed in serious relativity literature. Skynet, however, has aged from pulp premise to policy concern: an autonomous military network that starts a war when humans try to unplug it is now a standard scenario in AI-safety debates. The endoskeleton's power source and 1984-era 'living tissue over metal' remain pure cyber-myth.
