Stan Winston

Stan Winston

Special Effects

b. 1946 · USA

Winston trained as an actor before shifting into makeup and creature effects, apprenticing under Walt Disney Studios' respected makeup department in the late 1960s and absorbing a level of craftsmanship that shaped his own studio's exacting standards.

The greatest creature-effects artist of his era, endoskeletons, Alien Queens, Predators and T-rexes — if it terrified you practically between 1984 and 1993, Winston's shop probably built it. He founded Stan Winston Studio in 1972 and won four Academy Awards for makeup and visual effects over his career, working repeatedly with both James Cameron and Steven Spielberg across multiple decades of collaboration.

His hydraulic, life-sized dinosaurs for Jurassic Park shared screen time with early CGI so seamlessly that many effects historians consider it the exact moment practical and digital effects work truly merged into a single discipline, a turning point his studio helped engineer even as computer graphics began to displace some of the practical work it specialized in.
