Paul Verhoeven

Verhoeven grew up in Nazi-occupied and then postwar Netherlands, an experience of state violence and propaganda he has said directly shaped his lifelong suspicion of authority and uniforms on screen. He earned doctoral-level degrees in mathematics and physics from Leiden University before turning to filmmaking, an unusually rigorous academic background for a director who would become best known for splashy, satirical spectacle.

The Dutch provocateur who smuggled savage social satire into ultraviolent American blockbusters, nobody did corporate dystopia — or squibs — quite like Verhoeven. He built his reputation in the Netherlands directing controversial, sexually frank dramas that made him a major figure in Dutch cinema before Hollywood studios, often missing the satire entirely, hired him to direct some of the era's biggest and bloodiest American action pictures.

He has said in interviews that he considers the fascist propaganda embedded in Starship Troopers to be the joke critics and audiences most often missed on release, mistaking his deliberately over-the-top recruitment-ad aesthetic for sincere endorsement rather than satire of it. That gap between what Verhoeven intended and what audiences initially received has become a recurring, almost defining feature of his American career, with several of his films undergoing significant critical reappraisal decades later.
