Scott Derrickson

Director

b. 1966 · USA

Derrickson studied film at USC's graduate program before breaking into low-budget horror, gradually building a reputation for restrained, character-focused scares that stood apart from the era's more gore-forward horror trends.

A horror specialist (The Exorcism of Emily Rose, later Marvel's Doctor Strange), he brought an unusually somber, eco-anxious tone to his remake of a Cold War classic. He built his early reputation on grounded, restrained horror rather than jump-scare spectacle, an approach he carried into reworking the original film's alien-visitor premise around contemporary environmental anxiety instead of nuclear war.

He later became one of Marvel Studios' most prominent directors, helming Doctor Strange and demonstrating that his more grounded, atmospheric sensibility could scale up to major franchise filmmaking.
