Lilly Wachowski

Lilly Wachowski

Director · Writer

b. 1967 · USA

Like her sister, Wachowski grew up in Chicago working in construction and comics before either sibling had directed a studio feature, and the two co-wrote and eventually co-directed their projects as an inseparable creative partnership from the very beginning of their careers. Their early low-budget noir thriller gave Warner Bros. enough confidence to back a vastly more expensive and ambitious second feature.

Co-writer and co-director of The Matrix, whose blend of anime influences, comic-book framing and big philosophical questions became the template for 21st-century science fiction action, she and Lana co-directed all three original Matrix films together as full creative equals, an unusually consistent partnership for siblings directing at that scale.

Lilly later stepped back from directing feature films to focus on television and other projects, including an acclaimed series adaptation of a classic sci-fi novel. Both sisters have since discussed the trilogy's recurring themes of concealed selves and chosen transformation through the lens of their own gender transitions, reshaping how critics and audiences read the films in retrospect and cementing the Matrix trilogy's status as an unusually prescient piece of queer filmmaking.
