Lana Wachowski

Director · Writer

b. 1965 · USA

Wachowski grew up in Chicago and worked briefly in construction and as a comic-book writer with her sister before either had any real filmmaking experience, self-financing early creative work while developing screenplays on the side. Their first produced screenplay, sold in the early 1990s, led to directing a single low-budget neo-noir thriller that performed modestly but demonstrated enough visual confidence to secure studio backing for a far more ambitious project.

One half of the sibling team that closed the century by fusing Hong Kong action, cyberpunk philosophy and groundbreaking effects into a single black-leather package, she and her sister had written comic books and that one low-budget noir feature before The Matrix, making the scale and success of their second feature one of the most dramatic directorial leaps in modern Hollywood history.

She has since spoken publicly about how the film's themes of hidden identity and transformation reflected her own experience prior to her gender transition, a reading later widely embraced by critics and fans re-examining the trilogy's subtext. She and Lilly went on to direct two Matrix sequels together and several further collaborative projects across film and television.
