Bigelow studied painting at the San Francisco Art Institute and the Whitney Museum's independent study program before shifting into film at Columbia University, bringing a fine-artist's visual sensibility to her subsequent directing career.
Later the first woman to win the Best Director Oscar (The Hurt Locker), she brought her kinetic, first-person camera style to cyberpunk's most visceral film about recorded experience. She was briefly married to James Cameron, who co-wrote and produced this film.
Her historic Academy Award win came roughly a decade and a half after this production, cementing a directing career that moved from genre cult favorites to mainstream critical acclaim.
