Roger Deakins

Roger Deakins

Cinematographer

b. 1949 · UK

Deakins studied photography and film at the National Film and Television School in England before building a substantial career shooting British documentaries and features, eventually crossing into American cinema through his collaborations with the Coen brothers.

Cinema's most revered living cinematographer finally won his first Oscar — on his fourteenth nomination — for Blade Runner 2049's irradiated oranges and drowned greys. A frequent collaborator of the Coen brothers across decades of acclaimed films, he had been nominated repeatedly without a win for so long that his eventual victory prompted a standing ovation.

That ovation was widely reported as one of the more emotional moments of that year's ceremony, and he has continued working at the top of his field well into his seventies.
