Michael Anderson

Anderson began working in the British film industry as a teenager in the 1930s, gradually rising from production assistant to director over two decades before his biggest international success arrived.

A British journeyman director whose Around the World in 80 Days won Best Picture, he later turned his eye to a shimmering, doomed domed city for the young and beautiful only. He worked steadily across a huge range of genres throughout his career, from war films to science fiction to television movies, without becoming as closely identified with any single genre as some of his contemporaries.

His futuristic production design for the film's domed city drew heavily on then-contemporary shopping-mall architecture, a deliberately consumerist visual language for a society built entirely around youthful leisure.
