Laura Dern

Dern grew up around film sets as the daughter of actors Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd, appearing in small roles from childhood before building her own independent acting reputation through acclaimed independent dramas in the late 1980s and early 90s.

She brought fierce intelligence to Dr. Ellie Sattler — and delivered the era's best line about sexism in a running dinosaur crisis. She had already worked with Spielberg as a producer on an earlier project before landing the role, and pushed for Sattler's competence and courage to be taken as seriously as her male co-stars'.

She has cited the film's paleobotanist character as a role that meaningfully shaped young viewers' interest in science, and has continued to work across independent film and studio productions alike, eventually winning an Academy Award decades later for an entirely different kind of role.
