Howard Hawks

Howard Hawks

Producer

b. 1896 · USA

Hawks studied mechanical engineering at Cornell before working briefly as an aviator and race car designer, interests that fed directly into the aviation and adventure films that launched his directing career in the silent era.

One of Hollywood's great studio-era directors, credited here only as producer, the film's overlapping dialogue and unfussy pace are unmistakably his fingerprints. Widely regarded as one of the most versatile directors of Hollywood's golden age, he worked fluently across westerns, screwball comedies, war films and noir without ever developing a single obvious visual signature.

Many film historians consider this production effectively his uncredited directorial work as well, one of several instances across his career where his actual creative influence exceeded his formal credit.
