Gottfried Huppertz

Huppertz trained as an opera singer and actor before turning to composition, working in German theater and early cinema before Fritz Lang brought him onto what would become his most enduring work.

He composed Metropolis's original orchestral score to be performed live alongside the silent film — a leitmotif-driven score that anticipated John Williams by half a century. He worked closely with director Fritz Lang throughout the film's production rather than scoring it afterward, an unusually collaborative arrangement for the silent era.

His score assigns distinct musical themes to individual characters and locations, a technique that would become standard practice in film scoring decades later, making him an unrecognized pioneer of an entire approach to composing for the screen.
