Fred Karlin

Karlin studied at Amherst College and worked as a jazz trumpeter before moving into film and television composing, building a reputation across drama and comedy well before this early science fiction assignment.

An Oscar winner for Best Original Song, Karlin scored Westworld's shift from Old West player-piano pastiche to cold electronic menace as the robots stop following the script. He had already won an Academy Award for the song "For All We Know" before taking on this project.

His score's deliberate shift from warm, nostalgic western music to sparse electronic dread mirrors the film's own narrative turn, and that structural contrast became a template later genre scores would frequently borrow.
