Don Siegel

Siegel studied at Cambridge and trained at RADA in London before returning to Hollywood, where he worked for years in the montage department at Warner Bros. before earning his own directing assignments on modest B-pictures.

Later Clint Eastwood's favorite director (Dirty Harry), Siegel shot a $300,000 B-picture about conformity and paranoia so precisely that audiences are still arguing about what it means decades later. He was known throughout his career for delivering tightly-budgeted, efficiently shot genre films that nonetheless carried real thematic weight.

The film's ambiguous political reading — as either an anti-communist or anti-McCarthyist parable — has never been definitively settled, and Siegel himself gave conflicting answers about his intentions across different interviews over the years.
