Richards began her career as a model before moving into acting through television and film roles in the early 1990s, gradually building a career in mainstream studio productions through the decade.
She played star pilot Carmen Ibanez, one of the few characters in the Mobile Infantry's endless bug war who actually seems good at her job. Already building a career in film and television at the time, she took on one of the film's central roles as a competent, ambitious military pilot.
The role remains one of her most widely seen film performances, coming at a high point in her early film career before she moved increasingly into television.
