Cronenberg studied literature and science at the University of Toronto before turning to filmmaking, a dual academic background that directly informed the clinical, almost medical curiosity running through his entire body-horror filmography.
The king of body horror, whose fusion of flesh and technology — televisions you can touch, hands that become weapons — gave cyberpunk its biological nightmare wing before the movement even had a name. He brought that clinical curiosity to his depictions of bodily transformation, setting his work apart from more conventional horror filmmaking.
He has continued making formally daring, boundary-pushing films for over five decades, remaining one of the most consistently provocative and influential directors in genre cinema.
