Christopher Lloyd
Actor
b. 1938 · USA
Lloyd trained at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York and spent nearly two decades working steadily in stage and television roles, building a reputation for eccentric supporting characters before his breakout as an unhinged airline mechanic on the sitcom Taxi.
Wild-eyed and wild-haired, his Doc Brown turned exposition into aria — "Great Scott!" is cinema's happiest catchphrase. He based much of Doc Brown's manic physicality and hair on a combination of Albert Einstein and conductor Leopold Stokowski, deliberately aiming for a scientist who looked like his own experiments had gotten slightly out of hand.
Already known for Taxi when he was cast, he went on to reprise the role across both sequels and an animated spin-off series, and Doc Brown has remained the single role most identified with his entire career despite decades of other film and television work.
