A Game of Thrones and Sopranos veteran, he brought prestige-TV pacing to Terminator Genisys's timeline-scrambling reboot. He built his reputation directing some of the most acclaimed episodes of prestige television before moving to blockbuster features, bringing an unusually patient, character-first sensibility to a franchise entry built around a fractured, alternate-timeline plot.

The film was intended to launch a new trilogy under his direction, though those planned sequels were never made, leaving Genisys as something of a standalone experiment within the larger franchise's history.
