John McTiernan

McTiernan studied at Juilliard and the American Film Institute before working for years directing television commercials, a background that sharpened his instinct for clean, legible visual storytelling under commercial time pressure. His feature debut, a modestly budgeted horror film, did little business but was enough to get him considered for much bigger studio action projects soon after.

For a five-year stretch he was arguably the best pure action director alive. McTiernan's gift was geography: you always knew where the hunter was, where the prey was, and exactly how much trouble everyone was in, a spatial clarity many action films before and since have struggled to match. He followed Predator almost immediately with Die Hard, giving him back-to-back genre-defining hits within roughly eighteen months of each other and cementing his reputation as the genre's most reliable craftsman.

His career later stalled under a string of legal troubles, including a federal prison sentence related to an unrelated illegal-wiretapping case involving a private investigator he'd hired, cutting short what had been one of the most promising directorial runs of the 1980s and 90s. He has directed only sporadically since serving his sentence, and his earlier films are now more celebrated than ever by both critics and action filmmakers who cite his staging as a direct influence.
